“Home Sweet Cary” Artist Residency, featured on NBC-17's My Carolina Today show, January 4, 2011

We are excited to welcome renowned British artist Helen Marshall for an artist residency from January 17 until February 11, 2011, as part of the “Home Sweet Cary” community-wide participatory art project.

“Home Sweet Cary” will use a variety of multimedia – including photography, moving image and sound – to explore the hidden demographic of Cary through the central theme of “home,” using residential spaces as a backdrop for gathering material. Marshall will collect information from community members, and Cary will appear in the final product through the words and voices of its community, ensuring the diverse range of participants are reflected in the work.

“CVA’s efforts to bring to our community a broader public art perspective is an exciting opportunity for citizens to learn more about how art can shape our experiences” said Lyman Collins, the Cultural Arts Manager for the Town of Cary. “Helen Marshall’s work is an innovative way to challenge our thinking about how we define community.”

Marshall will be working in a house at 114 Academy Street in downtown Cary, donated by Robert Alexander of AT Allen & Co in Raleigh, which will serve as an open studio where the public can visit with the artist and see the work in progress. The “Home Sweet Cary” project will culminate in an exhibition open to the public on February 9, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at 114 Academy Street in downtown Cary.

If you would like to be involved, please contact Clare Sifford, CVA’s Program Director at clare.sifford@caryvisualart.org.

This project is supported in large part by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources. “Home Sweet Cary” is also sponsored in part by the Town of Cary and artsee Magazine.
