CVA Spotlight:
Richard Ladd
CVA 2013-'14 Board President

Submitted by Jessica Patrick

As president of the Cary Visual Art Board of Directors, Richard Ladd plays an integral role in both CVA and in the town of Cary at large. His professional background in construction management combined with his familiarity and connection with the Triangle demonstrate his investment in Cary and in the economic growth that public art supports.

After obtaining his degree in Construction Management from East Carolina University, Richard entered the industry as a Project Developer with Bobbitt Design-Build. Later on in his career, he pursued development opportunities in both commercial and residential ventures through the establishment of Commercial Development Solutions and the Triangle Development Group.

Richard is currently Broker-In-Charge of Fletcher Ladd Properties and possesses extensive real estate experience including brokerage such as sales contract, lease negotiations, and tenant representation. Richard possesses additional experience from his development of many successful projects within the Triangle, and his construction services have included management, general contracting, and total site development with his in-house team.

Richard’s familiarity and love of downtown Cary, combined with his local roots, demonstrate his commitment to and appreciation of CVA. The Ladds’ ancestors owned land in Cary dating back to the 1920s, and family members currently own many of downtown’s well-known businesses, such as The Green Kangaroo, The Purple Polka Dot, and Serendipity.

The Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition: Artistic Treasures in Downtown Cary
Submitted by Jessica Patrick

Distinctive shops, beautiful churches and an old-fashioned soda fountain are not the only treasures found in downtown Cary. Twelve unique art sculptures line Academy Street for most of the year, giving the town an individual character.

Cary Visual Art is proud to commission the placement of these sculptures through our biggest event of the year. The Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, or OSE, is an annual program that invites artists from all across the nation to submit their sculptures and stories for consideration. Each year, a specially selected juror is chosen to pick twelve artists and their sculptures from this large pool of applicants. Following many exciting events, the OSE sculptures are installed all along Academy Street. The placement of these sculptures showcases the artists’ work while giving the town an enchanting and cultivated feel...Read On.

From the Director

For those of you who tend to burrow down during the winter months, it may feel odd to celebrate new beginnings when all you want to do is recouperate from the bustle of the last months of 2013. However, the time to plan for that new leaf is now and we here at CVA are embracing the opportunity through rekindling past connections and pursuing new ones. Here's a brief rundown of what's happening and what's in store for 2014:

2014 is the Year of Connections!

This year, CVA is committed to reaching out, reaching in and reaching beyond towards new community and program goals. We will be connecting with the Cary community in new ways; such as through more frequent eblasts, a new informational e-newsletter, special events for our sponsors and supporters and artist-led workshops and lectures. We are also gearing up for our 7th annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, slated to open on July 18! Mark your calendars for this intimate artists reception where you can celebrate the opening of this exciting event, meet the artists and juror, and support the arts in Downtown Cary.

On November 1 we celebrate the arts in high style at our 18th Annual Art Ball. Plan to join us at our most celebrated event to raise funds and awareness of the arts in Cary; live music, art auction and great food await. Check back often for emerging updates on this exciting event.

Programs Report:

The Reflection Gallery at WakeMed Cary Hospital

The Reflections Gallery at WakeMed Cary Hospital is in recognition of local artists and in appreciation of the staff at WakeMed. The family and friends of Sandy Lappin (1947 - 2011) devotedly donate this gallery in her remembrance.

Local artists from Cary and Wake County exhibit their work in three month quarters, four times a year. This gallery was made possible by the family of Sandy Lappin, in partnership with WakeMed Cary Hospital; an expansion of the gallery took place in the summer of 2013 with funds made possible by the Cary Photographic Artists.
