Susie Silver seeks to eliminate all or most realistic imagery from her work. She acquits herself from making work that has been expected of her. She focuses on manipulation of media while being immersed in the process of creating. Pieces are built with layers of media, constructing the final product over time through multiple working sessions. Basic elements and principles of art such as line, shape, color and movement are key factors demonstrated in Authenticity. Susie uses minimal tools in the process of creating pieces; often using her hands, fingers and breath to guide mediums around the working surface. Spontaneous and unplanned moments occur in every piece, which is exciting and challenging to her. Authenticity is Susie’s current body of work in which she has revisited her artistic roots and influences. She places no restriction on herself of what a final piece should look like, or in what style it should be created. She gets lost in the process of creation and media manipulation. Susie feels this body of work is the most genuine and authentic she has created in over ten years.
Susie Silver grew up in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended the New York State College of Ceramics within Alfred University in Alfred, New York where she earned her BFA in 2002. While attending Alfred University, she also earned a Minor in Art History and Art Education. Susie has furthered her studies at Studio Arts International in Florence, Italy and Penland School of Crafts in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. She is finishing her fourteenth year as a Visual Art teacher at Cary High School. She earned her National Board teaching certification in 2010. Susie also owns and operates Red Bird Goods and Locally Made Market. Susie currently resides in Cary, North Carolina with her spouse and three year old son.
