ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The day before a gallery opened, when an artist would varnish the work to go into a show the next day, art elites would be invited to view the show early, on the "varnishing day," or "Vernissage." As a young artist, this exhibition is an early view into the artist Rachel Breitinger will become. This is her Vernissage.

Her portfolio contains a wide variety of work. Her favorite subject is portraits, and her preferred medium is realistic colored pencil. She likes to experiment with blending opposing colors together to make a plain tone, as well as experimenting with the "correct" way to use colored pencil. Often involuntarily, she gravitates toward cool color schemes, specifically of blues and greens, but she is fascinated by primary triadic schemes. Underneath the overarching calm tone of her work, many well-thought out meanings and interpretations emerge that may not be immediately apparent.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The artist, Rachel Breitinger, is a recent graduate of Cary High School, heading off in the fall to East Carolina University as a Centennial Fellow in their Honor's College. She is going to major in Art Education and is considering double majoring in Art with a minor in Art History. With this, she hopes to become an elementary school visual art teacher. She was born in Pecos, New Mexico, moving to Northfield, Minnesota at age 2 and to Cary, North Carolina at age 12. The artist is eighteen years old and lives in Cary with her parents and younger sister.
