Public Art in Focus Outreach Workshop at Pathways for People
Our June Public Art in Focus Outreach Workshop was a great success with sculptor Paris Alexander and the great folks over at Pathways for People Day Program for people with disabilities. Cary Visual Art was proud to be able to team up with an artist from our 2013 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, on exhibit in downtown Cary, to participate in this program. This workshop was led by local artist and sculptor Paris Alexander, who generously supplied two pieces of limestone to be artfully carved upon by the Pathways participants. In partnership with the Pathways staff, instructors and guardians, the Pathways participants were able to use carving tools to chip away at the pre-sketched forms prepared by Paris prior to the start of the workshop.
The workshop was broken into three two-hour segments, stretched out from the last week in May until June 10. Paris' generous donation of his time and materials to work with these interested individuals to carve forms, bang away at stone and wash and polish the end result was what made these workshops more than just a one-time experience; the stones lived at Pathways during the entire time and people were able to interact with them during different phases of production. Everyone had a chance to carve their own special grooves into the stone, and the results are amazing. The participants not only had a great time, but the resulting works are beautiflul. The two works are now on display outside the Pathways for People main doorway for all to enjoy!
Thank you so much to Diana, Jack and the gang at Pathways for People for allowing CVA to bring this workshop experience to your establishment. And thank you to Paris Alexander for making this workshop such an amazing and lasting experience for all who participated. We at CVA cannot wait to schedule another Public Art in Focus workshop - stay tuned for information on our next destination!
